Every once in a while an innovation so impactful comes along that it shakes the very foundation of what we believed was the limit of human creativity. According to telegraph.co.uk, researches from Chonman National University, have created a microscopic robot to assist doctors with the clearing of arterial blockages.

A microscopic robot you say? Aye, that’s what I said. Researchers are planning to have doctors implant these tiny little crab like robots in patients’ arteries to clear out harmful clogs that could cause heart attacks and other heart complications. Currently used methods of prevention require a lot of risks on the patient’s behalf.
The actual design of the robot is very unique. Researches noticed that when attaching the robot to a grafted heart muscle, it’s legs would bend as the cells contracted. Using it’s three short front legs and three longer back legs, this little sucker can travel a total of 55 yards within a week. Considering that it is less than a millimeter in size, that’s quite an accomplishment.
The function of it seems quite simple, search and destroy clogs in the patient’s arteries. By moving with the contractions of the muscle cells, this little crab-like robot makes its way towards the designated destination and then releases a medical drug that would be used to breakdown the blockage. Pretty crazy huh?
Implications of technology this advanced could mean the start in a revolutionary boom in micro robotics. The fact that it uses NO EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY is groundbreaking in itself. I mean, this thing pulls sugar directly from your blood cells and converts it into an energy source. Excuse me but, wtf?
Maybe I’m more excited than I should be. There is still the issue of the body rejecting Chonman National University’s micro robot. Their scientists are currently experimenting on using the patient’s own blood cells to prevent this from happening. How? I’m not sure, I’ve yet to see something mentioned in depth on that matter. If any of you come across more information on this topic, and of course, any of our other topics (um, this one first if you can. Please?) on Doshimodo.com feel free to comment. I’d love to learn more about this and a picture would be great if you can. All I’ve seen so far are editorial concepts. Thanks in advance.
