Nintendo, it’s pretty much a household name. Whether you own an NES or a Wii, or none of their systems at all, you know what people are referring to when you hear the word. Nintendo, meaning “entrust luck to the heavens” company, has stood above the other companies in the video game industry for one main reason, customer loyalty and consistent support.

One of the things that made me fall in love with Nintendo, is that even when they released a new system, they still continued to dish out games for their older systems. You might be wondering why I would ever buy a new 8-bit video game for my NES, NOSTALGIA baby, that’s why. I can’t get enough of it, I have loved and been a Nintendo loyalist from day one. I still collect games for my N64 to this very day. The games have to be imported of course but they are still lots of fun. A lot of very important moments in my life have occurred on Nintendo’s system, seriously. Well, that is until high school, but that’s for a different forum.
“Though as the times change, we will, at some point, be forced to change with it.”
Though as the times change, we will, at some point, be forced to change with it. Nintendo realizes this fact, and after decades of support for the Famicon, Super Famicon and N64, Nintendo has finally decided that it is time to let go of the past, and move on. No other video game company has showed such dedication for any of their outdated systems. Except for maybe Sega, who also announced that they would be dropping support for the Dreamcast.
Nintendo will be dropping hardware support for the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy and Gameboy pocket. I’m just amazed at how long Nintedo supported these systems. Nintendo Assures us that these games will still be available for download using the Wii’s Virtual Console. There is a cost for the downloads but think of it this way, when your NES dies and you can’t find another one, this will be an option to re-establish your collection on a more reliable and up to date medium.
So as of October 31st, there will be no more support for Nintendo’s older generation consoles. So I say adieu to you my old companions, I will keep you free from moisture and dust for the next several years inside my attic. Then I will eBay you for lots and lots of money.
