So you think you’re a hot shot because you have over 200 jumps from 10,000 feet. Good for you. Now try it from beyond the atmosphere. That’s right. Orbital Outfitters is currently working on creating a body suit and parachute that will allow us to literally free-fall from space safely.

Picture that you are orbiting the earth on a NASA star gazing mission, when all of a sudden, space debris begins tearing apart your ship. Without a second thought you push the hatch open and fling yourself into the big black nothing. You propel yourself towards earth at speeds over 2500mph, faster than any human has ever gone without the assistance of a vehicle. You release the first chute upon entering the atmosphere to provide stability to your fall. Once you reach 3000 feet you deploy your main chute and glide safely to the ground.
“They call it “the most extreme sport in human history”. No kidding…Where do I sign?”
How is this possible? The creators at Orbital Outfitters seem to believe that with a heat resistant space suit and the right type of chutes, it can be done. They are hoping to be the first to develop the equipment you’ll need to get you back from space without your ship. They call it “the most extreme sport in human history”. No kidding…Where do I sign?
The design of the suit is actually very reminiscent of the movie Rocket Man, except without the bronze helmet. Remember, all of this is currently in the works and still has yet to be proven functional, but if Orbital Outfitters can pull this off, then the REAL space boom is about to start. What, with Japan soon to be offering orbital tours, and NASA selling rides to the highest bidder, these “Jump Suits” will be one of the most valuable assets in future space travel.
Orbital Outfitters still has some work to do on this ground breaking project and no release date has been heard of as of yet. But keep your eyes open ladies and gentlemen. The future may be unfolding before your very eyes and it looks very promising.

3Interesting concept. Aside from the requirement to keep a person from burning up in the atmosphere upon returning to Earth, I’m concerned about the idea shown here regarding Oxygen storage and consumption. There’s no design showing the amount of oxygen storage and how long supplemental oxygen will last. Sure there are scrubbers to filter out CO2 but the rebreather concept may not be able to provide sufficient oxygen for the duration of the freefall. The freefall will have to be slowed down to prevent reentry burnup therefore increasing the time to get down to an atmospheric enriched environment. (below 10K ft) Another issue which I’m sure the company is well aware of is the PSI level within the space suit. It must be kept to at least 18K ft equivalent altitude to prevent possible effects of Decompression Illness. How is this pressure inside the suit maintained? Anyway, lots of technological issues to over come to be able to provide the type of extreme experience that they are looking to provide. This will be a very dangerous activity which will challenge this company to the extreme itself.

4You bring up several good issues here that didn’t come to mind as i was writing the article. I’m going to contact Orbital Outfitters to see if they have addressed these issues and how. Permitting how long it takes me to get a hold of them, I’ll try and have some info up before the middle of next week. Thank you, by the way, for shedding some light on some of issues not addressed in the design concept above.
